Welcome back to our Get Hired job search blog series.  Today is day 9 in the Get Hired sequence.

Question of the Day: What’s On Your Mind?

So far in the process you (should) have listed your marketable and transferable skills, written down your idea of your dream job, dedicated a planner to job hunting, deciding how much time you will commit to your job search each week, set a target for the number of positions you will apply for, and determined which job search strategies you will implement. Mental preparation is the next step before moving forward in the creation of employment tools like a resume and cover letter.

Job search tip #8: Develop a Hope Toolbox

You cannot control when you receive a job offer or which employer offers you a position. If you have been fired, laid off or unemployed for a time you may begin to feel fear, rejection, anger, or anxiety. Even if you are seeking a new position while currently employed job hunting can become a long, stressful process as a result of things outside of your control. Employers are seeking confident, resilient, optimistic workers. Do not let negative thoughts or feelings dictate your activities or damage your progress. Expect success.

Here are a few ways to remain positive and hopeful:

  • Commit to your job search plan
  • Create an awesome cover letter and resume
  • Connect with positive, supportive people
  • Eat right, exercise, and get adequate sleep
  • Be aware of negative thoughts
  • Read your list of accomplishments and skills
  • Use positive affirmations
  • Take up a hobby
  • Be kind to yourself
  • Seek help to cope with your emotions if necessary

Stay tuned for job search tip #9 tomorrow.
