Welcome back to our Get Hired job search blog series.  Congratulations!! You made it to day 31.

Question of the Day: Are you willing to delay financial gain?

The International Volunteer Directory defines the difference between an internship and volunteering as: “An internship is something that you choose to do in order to develop your skills in a profession. Volunteering can also serve this purpose, but the driving force is your desire to help out.”

Job search tip #30: Don’t Overlook Internships

Internships are temporary work relationships but they aren’t just for students any longer.  Just like volunteering, an adult internship is a great way to improve your resume, develop new skills, and build your professional network.  The goal with an internship, however, is to obtain paid employment.  Internships can be extremely valuable for adults desiring to change industries or those who have been unemployed for a significant amount of time.

An adult internship shows dedication and initiative.  Many internships are unpaid so take care in securing an internship that is directly related to the paid job of your dreams.  Since there is no better substitute for on-the-job training, an internship will set you apart from other candidates without work experience.  A quality intern must be willing to take direction, prioritize tasks, and contribute to a team. A quality internship provides an opportunity to explore the company from several different aspects. Clearly stating your objective to the employer helps ensure a mutually beneficial arrangement.
