I am a STRONG proponent of volunteering.  No matter if you’re providing direct or indirect support, I believe that we all have something to contribute and all have the potential to add value to the world.  Here are 5 reasons college students should participate in community service:

1. Make a difference
Volunteering strengthens the community. Whether serving in an after school program, animal shelter, or national park, volunteers have the opportunity to improve the quality of life for others. Community service also promotes unity and teamwork by bringing diverse people together.

2. Improve your health
Community service can improve both your mental and physical health. Volunteers often feel happy and optimistic and these emotions can boost your immune system. Helping others often allows you to focus less on your own troubles. You also get to network and meet new people with similar interests.

3. Increase your self-efficacy
Community service allows you to discover, utilize, and strengthen various skills and competencies. You learn more about your values, beliefs, knowledge, and physical capabilities.

4. Apply classroom knowledge in the real world
Instead of just learning about political activism you can advocate for social justice in your state. Getting involved in service projects allows you to apply what you’ve learned in the classroom in real life situations.

5. Improve your resume
You can develop leadership skills and gain practical experience in your chosen career field by volunteering. Serving others shows compassion and commitment and makes you more attractive to employers.
