A professional portfolio is an organized collection of documents and items that showcases your talents, most relevant skills, and chronicles your professional path. Portfolios are no longer just for artists, designers, or teachers. A portfolio can enhance the job search in every discipline or profession.
Unlike most people I have 3 professional portfolios.
- I have one portfolio that chronicles my professional career as an employee.
- I have one portfolio that showcases The Teen Toolbox – my entrepreneurial work in foster care, teen life skills, and independent living.
- My third portfolio highlights Nicki Sanders as a speaker and trainer.
Although every good Career Coach or Human Resources professional will advise you to tailor your resume and cover letter for each job you apply for it, it is not necessary to have more than one professional portfolio. In fact, I recommend that you only have one portfolio that showcases different facets of your academic and professional endeavors. A professional portfolio is a living document that should be revised and updated regularly. I recommend updating your professional portfolio at least quarterly.
I know you’re wondering why I have three portfolios but recommend that you only have one. The reason is simple – credibility. My portfolios are evidence of my professional qualifications and abilities. I use them in different settings to showcase different portfolio styles and portfolio development strategies. When I am promoting my Get Promoted Portfolio Development Seminar I bring at least two portfolios to the meetings. One portfolio is a store-bought portfolio with a set number of pages. The second is more traditional. The third is more creative and colorful and showcases more of my personality along with my skills and abilities.
