One of the most important things to remember when you want to get promoted on your job is that we are all in the people business. (Actually you need to keep this at the forefront of your mind everyday) Whether you are working in a car dealership, retail store, classroom, restaurant, manufacturing plant, or hospital we are all in the people business. Businesses do not survive without satisfied customers or clients. Customers and clients are…let’s say it together…PEOPLE.

The key to success in any business or nonprofit organization is having well-trained people who believe in the mission and values of the company where they are employed. I believe that a key ingredient to a qualified workforce is an effective leader. I dislike bad service but one of my major pet peeves is an incompetent supervisor. I don’t take this role lightly. An effective supervisor has to be a visionary and also a realist. An effective supervisor should be both a leader and a follower as well as a manager and a partner. An effective supervisor understands and values their role in building both successful people and successful products.

Here are 5 qualities of an effective supervisor:

  1. Is a good communicator
  2. Is fair and allows employees t0 express themselves
  3. Is competent and confident
