My First TEDx Event

I love watching TED Talks on YouTube. I was saying to a friend recently that I want to attend a TEDx event.  Almost immediately a Facebook friend whom I had wanted to meet offline announced that she would be speaking at a TEDx talk – TEDxHampdenWomen on May 29, 2015..

I went to graduate school at University of Maryland School of Social Work in Baltimore but I my knowledge of neighborhoods is dismal. Although I didn’t know exactly where Hampden was but of course I had to be there.

TEDxHampdenWomen – Exploring the Life & Experiences of Baltimore Women
Every day, our lives are filled with stories – from fleeting moments to life-changing events – that are the molecules, the cells, the organs, and the body that connects us to each other and to our joyous, gritty, heartbreaking, and magical city of Baltimore. TEDxHampdenWomen is an event that explores the life and experiences of Baltimore women in the here and now, and how we build on our past to point us toward our future. And while our stories will continue, this event is a moment when we can share in those small victories, those teachable moments, those earth-shaking episodes that make us who we are today.

Speakers:
• Naijha Wright, Mt Vernon
• Breai Mason Campbell, Hamilton
• Elisa J Wells, Hampden
• Vaidehi Joshi, Mt. Vernon
• Ericka Alston, Sandtown-Winchester
• Cynthia Sanders, Stony Run
• Lola Manekin, Hampden

The event did not disappoint!! These amazing women boldly shared their trials along with their accomplishments. They challenged us to rethink personal connections, motherhood, wellness, drug addiction, creativity, and segregation. I was inspired and motivated to do and BE more. As if the speakers weren’t awesome enough, the icing on the cake was the group of fifth grade girls who had front row seats. What a way to encourage the next generation of women leaders.

This definitely will not be my last TEDx event.
