For years, many well-meaning adults advised students to pursue a job with the federal government or a large corporation. Jobs that provided a sense of security by way of a steady paycheck, good health care coverage, paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, regular cost of living increases, and upward mobility. Other sought after benefits include education and transportation assistance, business travel, and a retirement plan. Were we selling a dream?
Where is the security? Despite a bit of weekend hope and rhetoric, the 2013 government furlough continues and families, private industry businesses, government contractors, and nonprofit agencies that depend on federal government funding continue to suffer. Don’t worry I’m not going to make this a totally political post. There are too many social implications for me to do that!
Many of our young people are afraid and confused by the government shutdown. They are concerned about the here and now – Medicaid, food stamps, shelter and housing programs, federal student aid and affordable health care. What can adults do to help them?
- Provide the facts about this showdown and where government officials and political candidates stand on issues that are important to teens.
- Connect teens with organizations that can “fill in the gap” if they have been directly affected by the government shutdown.
- Continue to support teens in finding their passion and nurturing their talents and skills instead of chasing money.
- Incorporate 21st century skills in youth development activities and independent living training.
- Promote life-long learning and skill development (not just classroom education).
- Help teens build a strong support system and develop a well-connected professional network.
- Enroll your teen in our Packaged For Success program.
