A colleague asked me why I enjoy working with youth and I wanted to share my reasons with you. As I prepared to record this video, I heard a news story that saddened and angered me. I share some of my experiences with youth in the city and youth in the suburbs – what they have in common and how their fears and opportunities can differ.
Reminder: May is Mental Health Awareness Month
• I’ve been working with youth in some capacity since 2000.
• I’ve been an internship supervisor since 2013 and have supervised social work, sociology, public health, psychology, nursing, family studies, and human relations students.
• I’ve been a college professor since 2014. I love it and can’t escape it – even when I’ve tried.
You know my mantra is I am paid well to do work that I love and that comes naturally to me. In this video I share how my experience growing up in Washington, DC in the 80’s and as a first-generation college student in the 90’s combined with my natural skills and abilities to develop my passion for supporting teens and young adults for over two decades.
This “Why Do I Enjoy Working With Youth?” video is a little longer than most…as my passion bubbled to the surface…I think in a good way.
Why Do Today’s Youth Need Social Workers?
Youth need social workers to hear them, believe them, encourage them, mentor them, and advocate for them. When we look at the state of the world, it’s easy to get lost in doom and gloom and even write young people off – but that’s not what we do here. It’s up to us as adults and social work professionals to change the trajectory for youth and our collective future.
What are you committed to doing?
