To decide is to make up one’s mind on a given topic or issue, come to a decision, make a choice, make up your mind, or reach a conclusion.
Successful people are decisive. Let’s clarify here that decisive and impulsive are not the same. Impulsivity is characterized by taking poorly conceived actions without foresight or actions that are prematurely expressed, unnecessarily risky, and inappropriate to the situation.
Successful people make important decisions quickly without procrastination, overthinking, and fear-based inaction. They investigate the situation, explore various options, and make an informed decision based on facts and previous experience. They leverage the opportunities presented to them by thinking big and acting big because they are aware that not all opportunities offer second chances. Successful people are willing to fail forward and course correct as needed recognizing that there isn’t a path to success that doesn’t include failure, mistakes, or new learning.
Have you decided to succeed as a Woman of Color in social work leadership?
Where is the visible evidence of your decision to succeed?
Deciding to succeed is expressed in how you speak to yourself, how you show up in the workplace, how you engage with your team, and how you interact with your colleagues and other stakeholders.
Deciding to succeed looks like setting healthy boundaries that honor your needs, goals, and responsibilities. Successful women say not to things that divert them from their intended path and yes to things that move them closer to their desired outcomes.
Deciding to succeed looks like strategic self-advocacy and self-promotion. Success doesn’t include dimming your light so your colleagues can shine, allowing others to take credit for your work, or waiting quietly to be acknowledged for your amazing contributions.
Deciding to succeed looks like not accepting low wages with the knowledge that your social work skills are high-income skills
