- Do you have a goal to get promoted to senior leadership in the next 6 months?
- Do you have a goal of earning $125,000 in 2023?
- Do you have a goal of enrolling in a DSW program next fall?
Goals are essential for personal and professional development and career success. Goals are a road map. The power of writing your goals down is that it helps you to see where you are going if any changes need to be made, and if you are moving in the right direction toward what you want to achieve.
But what about vision?
What is the vision that you have for your social work leadership career?
Both goals and visions guide your focus. A goal is set as a specific target action that moves you toward your vision. Vision utilizes your imagination. A vision is a clear image of how you see your future. Vision is aligned with your deepest beliefs, values, and priorities. Your vision is your desired future – what you want to become or create.
The primary difference between visions and goals is action. Your vision is your what and why with strong feelings/emotions attached to it. Your goals are thoughts with the when, where, and how activities that accompany them.
Goals are action-oriented, the tasks needed to produce results. Goals are a means to an end and your vision is an end in itself. The goals you set are aligned with the vision you want for yourself. Goals are the actions you take to make your vision come to life. You can think of your vision as the destination and your goals as the journey to arrive at your intended destination.
