You’ve landed the perfect internship and now the real work begins. Don’t count on the impression you made during your interview to get you through your internship. You want to learn and strengthen as many skills as possible while contributing to the overall success for your internship site. It’s time to produce.
Here are 5 ways to make a great first impression in your internship
1) Arrive Early
Punctuality is important in the work world. You definitely don’t want to be late but it is actually in your best interest to arrive at least 10 minutes early. This will show your internship supervisor and coworkers that this opportunity is important and you are willing to go the extra mile. This will also give you a little time to take a deep breath and gather yourself before your official start time.
2) Dress Professionally
Pay special attention to your attire the first few days and weeks of your internship. Your attire should reflect your personal style while shoeing that you understand the culture of the organization. If you are in a relaxed or casual work environment it is still better to be over-dressed than under-dressed. Avoid attire that is political, too tight, too baggy revealing, extremely worn, or contains stains, holes or rips.
3) Get Organized
Organization is a key to success in almost every endeavor. Although you will likely be given access to work materials and office supplies on your first day, you should arrive prepared with your own resources to take notes, schedule meetings, and collect reading material. Be polite to everyone you meet and try your best to remember the names of your colleagues.
4) Arrive Prepared
Preparation for your first day should include review of the materials from your interview preparation and interview. Take time to research additional facts about the company and information about the industry in general. This will allow you to speak more confidently and competently with your supervisor and colleagues.
5) Be Positive
Expect to have a good day. Take time to observe the formal and informal processes and learn the company culture. Ask clarifying questions and be receptive to advice. Take initiative but also ask for help.Plan to socialize with your coworkers and contribute to team efforts. Complete all tasks with enthusiasm and a positive attitude.
