Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of summer. While many families are headed to the beach, retail stores are having massive sales, the federal government is closed, and the families and friends of those lost in combat mourn. Some elected officials may even participate in parades or national cemetery visits.
But what does it all mean? How did we get here? Where are we going?
I won’t apologize for my cynicism – I’m working on getting back to my natural state of hope and gratitude – but my heart is heavy when I consider the true meaning of today.
I can’t help but think about the soldiers continuously put in harm’s way, soldiers mistreated at home, and how the families of the fallen are revered, honored, or forgotten after the medals are given and the funerals are complete. Today it all feels like a vicious cycle of platitudes and ceremonies.
I am truly grateful to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
