Adoption, Foster Care, and Secret Millionaire

If you’ve read my blogs for more than a couple of weeks you know that I am a huge proponent of volunteerism.  I believe that each of us has a responsibility to help our fellow man.  I am so excited when service meets philanthropy and ABC’s Secret Millionaire TV show marries the two wonderfully.  Secret Millionaire is one of my all-time favorite TV shows.

On this week’s episode,  Camping World CEO  Marcus Lemonis returns to his hometown, Miami where his volunteerism raises awareness about bullying, young adults aging out of foster care, and homelessness.  Marcus, who was adopted from an orphanage in Beirut, Lebanon as an infant, opens up about the bullying he endured during his childhood and his struggle with an eating disorder.  He volunteers with three great organizations: 1.) National Voices for Equality Education and Enlightenment; 2.) New Journeys Transitional Home, and; 3.) Neat Stuff.

There are many criticisms about the “fairness” of the show but I appreciate that Secret Millionaire delivers the plight of many disadvantaged and under-served Americans directly into the homes of millions of people who may never have known about it otherwise.  The organizations profiled not only receive a donation from their Secret Millionaire but generally additional donations flood in after the show airs.  I believe that Secret Millionaire creates a domino effect.  I am hopeful that hundreds (or even thousands) of people are inspired to learn more about certain causes, make financial donations, and volunteer in their local communities as a result of the TV show.  Thank you, Marcus and ABC, for raising awareness about the needs of youth aging out of foster care.  You can also get involved.
