Can You Supplement Your College Education With YouTube?

Facebooktwitterpinterestlinkedinmail

Where can you go to learn how to do the latest dance, tie a tie, braid your hair, start a podcast, cook squash, or fix a leaky toilet? Of course it’s YouTube. YouTube is not only a great tool for life skills development but can also be used to complement your college education. You can log on to YouTube to find answers to burning questions, new ideas for a class project, instructions to a science experiment, or different perspectives on the debate of the day.

After you watch your favorite music video you can use YouTube to learn more about your college major and the career opportunities available to you. You can even “comparison shop” to learn what courses are being offered to students with the same major at other institutions and get advice from top professionals.  Conduct your own research by logging on to YouTube and replacing the words “social work” with your college major:

  1. Introduction to social work
  2. Social work student
  3. Social work schools
  4. What can I do with a social work degree
  5. Day in the life of a social worker
  6. How to become a social worker
  7. Interview with a social worker
  8. Social work associations

And just in case you’re getting a little weary or discouraged about the path that you have chosen you can log on to YouTube for a dose of encouragement and inspiration from your favorite poet, speaker, or preacher.  Oh, and YouTube is also a great way for you to share your own wisdom and discoveries.

Check out the amazing and motivating video geared toward specifically  “Helping Professionals” but I think it’s a great introduction to service for everyone.

(Description) In a world of injustice, nothing ever changes – until someone is tough enough to challenge the existing order. Most people find it’s easier to look the other way. But there are always a few bold souls who simply can’t. They’re the ones who stand up, speak out, sit in, and generally refuse to shut up. Are you one of them?

Reminder/Disclaimer: Not everything that is found online is factual, helpful, healthy or even legal. Employ your critical thinking skills at all times while surfing online. Do not take advice from or follow any YouTube video that gives you cause for concern or goes against your ethics or values.
