Don’t Put Your Hands There!

Welcome back to our Get Hired job search blog series.  I hope your job search is full of excitement and quality interviews!

Question of the Day: Do you have good posture?

The most important component of every encounter, connection, and relationship is communication.  Take notice of your verbal and nonverbal communication.

Job search tip #21: Be aware of your body language

You are well dressed, have a firm handshake, make good eye contact, speak clearly, and have properly prepared answers to major interview questions so what could go wrong?

When connecting with a hiring manager, the main goal is to market yourself effectively by telling your story based on the life lessons you lived and learned with each employment experience you share.  In addition, please be mindful that what you do not say can also hinder your chances of a successful hire.  We’ve already discussed appearance and today I want to leave you with tips on avoiding detrimental body language.

  •  Face the interviewer with your body.
  • Convey interest by leaning slightly forward during the interview.
  • Smile
  • Keep your hands away from your face and neck, out of your pockets.
  • Do not slouch or fold your arms.
  • Sit in your chair without tapping, fidgeting, or patting your feet.
  • Do not stare at the interviewer or at different areas in the room.

Stay tuned for job search tip #22 tomorrow.
