I Can Go Alone

Welcome back to our Get Hired job search blog series.  We’ve passed the halfway mark – day 18.

Question of the Day: Are walk-ins welcomed?

Retail stores aren’t the only businesses that accept applications and resume onsite.

Job search tip #17: Submitting applications in person is your first interview.

I have found that mornings are the best time to walk in.  Be courteous to everyone you encounter.  When submitting applications and resumes in person you should implement the same clothing guidelines utilized for interviews and job fairs – dress to impress. Do not take friends and family members with you inside the business.  Be sure your cell phone is turned off or on silent.  Extend your hand, greet the employees, and introduce yourself by your full name.  Next sentence should inform staff of the position you are applying for.  I advocate asking to speak directly with a manager and submitting a resume along with your application.  Be sure to get the name of the person who accepts your materials.  It may not always happen but you should be prepared for an on the spot interview.  Do not accept phone calls, surf the internet, or text while waiting to submit your application/resume.  At the end of your discussion thank the people you have met and say goodbye with a firm handshake.
