On Tuesday I did something I love to do but hadn’t done in a very long time. I spent three hours in a public library. I use the library regularly to check out books or make copies takes a few minutes because I generally research what I want in advance and go straight to that section toretrieve it or have it put on hold. But two days ago I spent time perusing different sections and browsing through lots of books. I loved the atmosphere – quiet and people reading and working. Ironically, my daughter had gone to a different library earlier in the day and checked out a book “just because”. She also had not read for pure enjoyment in awhile and felt the urge. I believe that public libraries are one of our greatest resources.
Amongst all the resume writing books I found a gem – “101 Careers in Counseling” by Shannon Hodges. More on that in another post. [Register for my Get Hired Workshop or Get Promoted Portfolio Development Seminar for awesome career development support.)
As I walked through the business aisle I came across one of my favorite books by one of my favorite entrepreneurs, “Making A Living Without A Job” by Barbara Winter. I was so excited because although my book is a decade old I had never seen a copy in any library I visited.
As I traveled down the management aisle I came across “Full Steam Ahead: Unleash The Power of Vision In Your Work and Your Life” by Ken Blanchard and Jesse Lyn Stoner. The title caught my eye because I had just told a cousin earlier in the day that I was moving “full speed ahead”. I sat down to skim the pages and was captivated. as I travel this ‘Packaged For Success” path, the story spoke to me both personally and professionally. I am creating a new vision for my life and work and I found the right book at the right time. I checked the book out and finished reading it in two days. Now I am going to go back and read it again then revisit my vision. Stay tuned…
