Great social workers are leaving the profession, and some seasoned social workers are deterring potential great social workers from joining the profession. Many social workers regret their decision to enter this career.
Is a social work degree worth it? I’ve been asked this question on more than one occasion.
My Answer: YES, YES, and YES!!!
I love slow mornings and afternoon walks.
I love having a variety of places to go to a couple of days a week without commuting in rush hour traffic.
I love teaching and training both inside and outside of traditional classrooms.
I love witnessing growth in my clients, interns, and students.
I love that I get to define social work career success on my own terms.
I love that I am paid well to do work that I love and that comes naturally to me.
I love that my social work skills are highly transferable, high-income skills.
My Proof:
- I’ve done residential, community, and school-based nonprofit work.
- I’ve been an adjunct professor and internship coordinator and supervisor for a decade.
- As an entrepreneur, I offer career coaching, professional development, and organizational development services.
- Program development/management, group facilitation, and workplace wellness are my passion and expertise.
- I recently delivered an international keynote address and team building session.
ALL without a social work license.
REMINDER: Social workers do not take a vow of poverty and it’s time we eliminate the outdated, narrow view of social work.
BOOK NICKI: I am currently accepting training, speaking, panelist, and guest lecturer engagements.
