Question: Is Social Media Essential for Professionals?
I have built a personal brand and gained many clients and connections and taken many courses on social media, but the truth is that I am on social media because I am an entrepreneur. I’m unsure if I would have given in to social media if that wasn’t the case.
Even after all these years online, I still feel like social media can be a weird place! So many personalities, stories, and obsessions.
– Competition where there could be collaboration.
– Obstacles where there could be opportunities.
– Conflict where there could be connection.
People freely divulging their thoughts and opinions like running water. It can be a lot!
As social workers, we understand that:
– A person can have lots of social media followers and still need external validation and approval
– A person can be in a leadership position (formal or informal) and still struggle to feel accepted
– A person can always speak first and speak the loudest but still struggle with multiple insecurities
– A person can boast about their great salary and still struggle with feeling successful
– A person can be the life of the party and still struggle with loneliness
– A person can be college educated and still be ignorant about the things that matter most
My advice: See people for who they are and don’t let their actions and behaviors stifle your goals or ruin your professional reputation.
More Transparency: The less time I spend on social media, the more I enjoy my day
