Age Out = to reach an age, 18 or 21 years, for example, at which one is no longer eligible for certain special services, such as education or protection, from the state.
Emancipate = to free from restriction or restraint, especially social or legal restraint
Age Out = the process of a youth transitioning from the control of the foster care system towards independent living
Age Out – Statistics
According to Child Welfare League of America:
- Twenty-five percent of foster youth in a national study reported that they had been homeless at least one night within 2.5 to 4 years after exiting foster care.
- Three in ten of the nation’s homeless adults report foster care history.
- Fifty-four percent of former foster youth completed high school according to a national survey
- Thirty-eight percent of former foster youth maintained employment for one year.
