Leadership Is About Transformation, Not Transactions

As high-performing Women of Color in leadership, we often feel the pressure to prove ourselves by working longer hours, taking on additional responsibilities, and ensuring that every task gets done perfectly. But the truth is that leadership is not about transactions; it’s about transformation. The transformation of culture, expectations, and metrics that happen in your team when everyone is collaboratively working toward the same goal.

When we focus solely on checking boxes, it’s easy to fall into the trap of transactional leadership – to-do lists, micromanaging, and short-term wins. Transactional leadership focuses on structure, control, and short-term goals. It’s about completing tasks, following rules, and maintaining order. While structure is important, leadership that relies too much on transactions limits growth and innovation and damages morale.

Transformational leadership challenges us to think bigger, empower others, and create sustainable impact that extends beyond our daily responsibilities. It’s about vision, empowerment, and legacy. For Women of Color, stepping into transformational leadership means shifting from doing all the work ourselves to developing, encouraging, and elevating or team.

Transformational Leadership Requires:

  1. Mindset Shift: Lead with Purpose, Not Just Process

Transformational leaders are visionaries who focus on how they inspire and empower others. They prioritize purpose over process and shift from managing work to creating deep impact.

  1. People-First Approach: Elevate & Empower Others

Transformational leaders don’t just lead by authority, they lead by influence. This means delegating, investing financially in their team, mentoring others, and creating opportunities for growth.

  1. Long-Term Vision: Creating Sustainable Success

A true leader isn’t just focused on the next deadline, but on the next generation. Transformational leadership ensures that their impact continues even after they’ve moved beyond their current position. It makes things better far into the future.

Many high-performing Women of Color unknowingly fall into transactional leadership habits such as:

  • Feeling the need to prove themselves by overworking
  • Burning out from micromanaging
  • Getting stuck on the hamster wheel of doing instead of leading

To shift out of these habits, leaders should start by delegating more, mentoring others, and focusing on strategic priorities. A leader’s value isn’t in how the number of tasks they personally complete do; it’s in the impact they create.
