Managing Up

You’ve likely heard the career term “managing up” but what does it really mean? The process of managing up includes being aware of your supervisor’s needs and preferences and intentionally performing your job in a way that increases their likelihood of success. Although appropriately managing up should result in a mutually beneficial working relationship, the ultimate goal should not be to get promoted. Managing up is not empty flattery or kissing up – in a nutshell it is being a strong team player who deliberately advances the company mission or agenda.
