Advice is never in short supply for new college graduates. I’m sure you’ve been given financial, career, health, and even relationship advice over the last few weeks. Your college years may have ended but education is continuous. My advice to you today is covers a variety of topics – Never Stop Learning.
Never Stop Learning: 5 Ways to Keep Your Brain Sharp after College Graduation
1. Read – I know you’ve read thousands upon thousands of words during your college years but don’t stop now. There is more to literary life than textbooks. Reading is a great way to exercise your brain and stay up to date on trends in your industry. Take some time to read for both fun and knowledge building.
2. Classmates – Strengthen your brain cells and your network by staying connected to your classmates. Stimulating conversations with peers about new jobs, new skills, and new experiences encourages new ways of thinking and looking at the world.
3. Travel – Remember those educational field trips from middle school? Well forget them as you go out and explore your world. Experiencing new cultures, ideas, and people is a great way to boost your creativity and productivity (and make great dinner party conversation).
4. Informational Interviews – This is a great insider secret even if you are not job hunting. Build your knowledge base by spending time with experienced professionals who can offer practical advice and innovative ideas not only about your career field but travel, academics, finances, relationships, and health.
5. Continuing Education – There are no shortage of ways to continue your education after college. Professional associations, employers, colleges/universities, adult education centers, and businesses offer a wide variety of seminars and workshops to help you become a life-long learner. Some are even free and very low cost.
