Social Work Is Still Political

There is A LOT going on in the world, and thanks to the World Wide Web, we all have a front row seat to it all.

It’s pretty easy to become discouraged, disappointed, and depleted. So, here are a few nuggets to nibble on this weekend:

1. Go where you are appreciated, not tolerated.

2. If you stay ready, you don’t have to get ready.

3. You can’t pour from an empty cup.

4. Rest is required, not earned.

5. Let your values lead your focus.

“May I stress the need for courageous, intelligent, and dedicated leadership…
Leaders of sound integrity. Leaders not in love with publicity, but in love with justice. Leaders not in love with money, but in love with humanity. Leaders who can subject their particular egos to the greatness of the cause.”

-Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

On Monday, January 20, 2025, I celebrated Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

I was uninterested in the circus that has become mainstream media and social media and the sensationalized dismantling of our democracy in each branch of government. We know what the multitude of challenges will be for marginalized groups because we were told exactly what the priorities of this administration would be. We’re beyond sulking and crying. I don’t plan to engage in pity parties and problem listening sessions for the next 4 years (or more). If we aren’t discussing solutions and more specifically solutions that value my time, experience, responsibilities, cautions, and culture, I am not participating. I am protecting my peace…and I suggest you find ways to do the same. Give yourself permission to do what’s best for you at this time!
