“You’re telling a story”
When I was a little girl, that’s what I had to say if someone was telling an untruth. I could not call them a liar or say that they were lying. Lie was a bad word in my home.
I also had to say “be quiet” instead of “shut up” “You better watch your mouth,” was a common warning from adults at that time.
Micromanagers and bully bosses are dangerous. The harm they cause isn’t always easily recognizable but sometimes the impact of working in a toxic workplace is that self-doubt comes to visit. We question ourselves and begin to tell ourselves negative stories about our abilities, intentions, actions, and opportunities. Watch your mouth! Silence the inner critic. Stop lying to yourself – it’s not you, it’s them. Oh, and reject all their lies while you’re at it.
How do you cancel the negative stories playing out in your head and slipping out of your mouth?
- Challenge the negative self-talk – Ask yourself if what you’re saying is true, appropriate, and helpful. Don’t speak anything to yourself that you wouldn’t say to a good friend or relative that you love.
- Reframe your words – Identify areas where you want to change. Reframe and replace negative words with positive ones.
