If you’ve read any of my blog posts you know that I am an advocate for volunteerism and service. I also have a special place in my heart for our military. I am eternally grateful to those who protect our security and freedom. I am dedicating today’s post to highlight ways that we can support and honor United States military service members and veterans.
Veterans Day 2011 is almost here. That’s right 11-11-11 is four days away. There are countless opportunities to show your gratitude for our active military soldiers and veterans. Below you will find a few examples to get you started.
Volunteer
- Visit hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and nursing homes t
- Give your time to a nonprofit organization that supports service members and veterans
Snail Mail
- Create and send personalized care packages
- Write and mail letters
- Create and send greeting cards
Financial
- Organize a monetary collection at your school, church, job or organization
- Organize a fundraiser (event)
- Buy or donate gift certificates
- Donate a calling card to allow families can stay in touch
Shop
- Spend your money with companies and organizations that support our military
- Purchase authorized pre-made care packages
Collect
- Halloween candy
- Candy, cookies, nuts, popcorn
- Books and movies
Military Families
- Donate new stuffed animals and beanie babies to children of deployed service members
- Become a mentor
- Adopt a military family
Recycle
- Donate an unwanted vehicle
- Donate old cell phones
- Donate ink jet cartridges
Spread the word
- Tell your friends and family about the sacrifices made by our military, veterans, and their families
- Share the message through social media
Don’t Stop
- Please don’t limit your service and support to holidays. You can make a difference in the lives of service members, veterans, and their families all year long.
There are definitely other ways to get involved. Take some time to do a bit of your own research to find ways to say thank you that fit your budget, lifestyle, location, and heart.
