Text message conversation with a client this morning:

Client: “You probably don’t have this issue considering you’re an educator but I’ll ask anyway. Do you have a time figuring out what to write for your accomplishments because you don’t receive it as that because it’s a regular part of your job?”

Me: “Absolutely, Everyone has and does. We’ve been taught to be humble and not brag and also that work should be hard so the things we do well or do easily/naturally we downplay. You are not alone.”

Client: “whew!!!!! What a relief to know I’m not alone!!!!! Just read my supervisor’s email to have this done by next Tuesday but I’ll get it done.

Me: You got this!!

Client: Emojis — thumbs up, smiley face, praying hands

On a discovery call yesterday, the new 2023 MSW I was speaking to said she wanted “to cry” because I validated her experience and goals. I get that quite a bit actually.

The reason why I do what I do the way that I do it is because I have been the professional who made a habit of prioritizing others, playing small, dimming my light, code-switching, and doing what I’m good at instead of doing what sets my soul on fire and I don’t want that for my client.
