Question of the Day: How Would Your Last Employer Describe Your Work Ethic?

A strong professional image and professional reputation are priceless to someone seeking employment.

Job search tip #19: Have a List of at least 3 Strong References

Most companies request three to five professional references from applicants.  Rule number one is to ask qualified candidates to serve as a reference for you.    Never assume that someone will.

References do not always have to include past supervisors. Select a professional reference who knows what to say as well as what not to say.  Connect with the lucky individuals and arrange a call or a brief meeting to update them on your employment history, career aspirations, and academic pursuits and ask them to serve as references?  This is also a great time to seek career advice that might enhance your skills or lead to new opportunities you were not aware of.  It is a good idea to provide your references with a copy of your cover letter and resume.  Be sure to include correct name and title, telephone number, email, and a brief statement about how you are connected or what aspect of your career they can speak about.  Include this information on a reference page that will be included in your professional portfolio.  Remember to reconnect from time to time – especially when you find new employment.
