5 More Ways Managing Interns is Similar to Parenting

There are several ways that being an intern supervisor resembles being a parent. I previously shared 5 Ways Managing Interns is Similar to Parenting. Today I want to share 5 More Ways Managing Interns is Similar to Parenting.

  1. Attention – Every intern wants to know that they matter and their contributions matter. Pay attention to your intern’s wants, needs, goals, words, and behavior. Don’t ignore them. Don’t assume everything is going good or going bad. Expect questions.
  1. Patience – Patience is essential when managing interns. Be fair and set realistic expectations.
  1. Mediation – Coworkers don’t always agree or get along. There may come a time when you have to intervene or mediate to avoid decreases in productivity or a tense work environment.
  1. Nurturance – Every intern is different. Some are confident and others are insecure. Some are reserved while others are bold. Some are good with customers while others possess strong technical skills. Treat each intern as an individual and manage based on that individuality. Nurture the talents and skills of each intern without showing favoritism.
  1. Positive Reinforcement – Praise the behaviors you want to see more of. Let your intern know when they are doing a good job so they are motivated to keep up the good work.
