Appreciation and Recognition Required!

A part of our human nature is the need to be acknowledged and to belong. Humans desire to be connected and recognized. In fact, it is essential to healthy development.

This doesn’t just apply to our personal lives. Employees perform better and remain employed longer in companies where they feel appreciated. What about you? Do you feel undervalued or unappreciated in your job or do you feel like you are seen, heard, and respected?

Let’s take a walk down memory lane. In your current position:

  • Have you been ignored when you introduce ideas?
  • Have been interrupted as you shared recommendations?
  • Have you been silenced as someone else takes credit for your work?
  • Have you been overworked and your talents misused?
  • Have you been criticized when you advocate for yourself or your colleagues?
  • Have you been passed over for a special project or promotion?

Micromanagement, disrespect, and intimidation are unacceptable. Exclusion from profitable initiatives and growth opportunities and denial of needed resources can make your question your abilities. A toxic workplace can shake your confidence. Never  believe that you deserve to be ignored or mistreated. You deserve to feel valued and be recognized for your contributions. If your current company doesn’t appreciate you, you have options.

Speak Up – Advocate for yourself by asking for what you need, highlighting your contributions, and validating your own brilliance.

Get Up – Your productivity, confidence, and morale suffer when you don’t receive the recognition and support that you need and deserve. Take an honest assessment of your current needs, expectations, and abilities. Take an honest assessment of the treatment you receive and the opportunities available to you. Be brave enough to be truthful. Stop settling for less and begin your job search.
