College Final Exams: Reflect and Study

The end of the spring semester is here and final exam season is in full effect. The final exam alternative is usually a research paper or project. My order of preference is: (1) project, (2) research paper, and (3) final exam.

What about you?

The number one final exam rule is don’t procrastinate. Study do not to cram for the test. Let’s keep it real – final exams suck! There is nothing fun or exciting about being tested on a full semester worth of reading materials and assignments. A strategy that may help shift your perspective on the final exam process is to reflection. I suggest you take time to reflect on the course and the semester overall. Reflection can help you gain clarity about what you learned, how you can apply the information to your life outside the classroom, and how you have grown academically and personally throughout the semester. In a nutshell, reflection is about self-evaluation and self-awareness. Taking time to reflect on your experience can help you discover your strengths, understand more about your values, learn from your mistakes, identify areas for improvement, do more of the things that worked well, and plan for your future.

“We cannot observe external things without some degree of Thought; nor can we reflect upon our Thoughts, without being influenced in the course of our reflection by the Things which we have observed.” -William Whewell
