I love Sesame Street!

  • I learned my first Spanish word, ‘agua’ from Sesame Street.
  • loved Bert and Ernie/s friendship.
  • Big Bird was embraced despite his super size.
  • The Count was fun to count along with.

Sesame Street was created to help level the playing field for children of lower economic status who could not afford or did not have access to quality early childhood education. The characters were diverse, loving, and realistic.

Helping children express and understand their emotions helps them overcome challenges, understand others, and communicate. Social-emotional learning strategies center on research that has linked the development of skills like building healthy peer relationships and responsible decision making to success inside and outside the classroom. I believe that Sesame Street has a positive long after preschool.  The social emotional skills developed through watching Sesame Street can follow adults into the workplace.

Daniel Goleman, an American psychologist, developed a framework of five elements that define emotional intelligence which are self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills.  Emotional intelligence has been defined as the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one’s emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and empathetically.  Emotional intelligence is the ability to identify and regulate your emotions, apply skills like analyzing and problem solving, and also having the ability to assist and support others.

Emotional intelligence is related to deeper job satisfaction and increased job performance. Teamwork, critical thinking skills, and tenacity allow people with high emotional intelligence to become great administrators, supervisors, and employees.

Happy 50th Anniversary Sesame Street!
