Don’t Be Average

In my opinion good enough is rarely good enough in a professional environment and everyone should strive for excellence. (Notice I said strive for excellence and not perfection.  Perfect doesn’t exist.) The list of skills that are valuable and transferable across industries is long. Planning, organization, interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills are at the top of my list.

  • Average students are rarely admitted to great institutions
  • Average interns rarely get noticed
  • Average employees rarely get promoted

Today I want to give you three steps to take your transcript, resume, and performance evaluations from average to exceptional.

  1.  Lead – Volunteer for or accept leadership positions in groups and clubs and on projects or events
  2. Create – Create a program, project, or club from start to finish
  3. Serve – Show that you care about something other than yourself by providing direct or indirect service for a group or cause

Each of these steps will not only enhance your professional skills and build your professional network, they will also help you clarify your skills, interests, and talents.
