Don’t Do That!

I have interviewed A LOT of people. There are a few that unfortunately stand out in my mind for all the wrong reasons. Let me share three of my not so favorites. I remember:

  • The clinician who described her work style as “loosey goosey”
  • The guidance counselor who used a racial slur in his description of a time when he had to take charge
  • The program facilitator who arrived early for her interview and decided she had just enough time to smoke one more cigarette in her car before our meeting

Here are a few more things you should never do on a job interview.

  1. Arrive late
  2. Answer your cell phone, text, or post to social media
  3. Criticize your last employer or supervisor
  4. Arrive without professional references or extra copies of your resume
  5. Tell the interviewer you really need the job or need money
  6. Ask questions about the company or position that can be found with simple research
  7. Leave an interview without asking relevant employment questions
  8. Interrupt the interviewer
  9. Wear heavy perfume, cologne, or scented lotion
  10. Arrive intoxicated or high on drugs
  11. Eat candy, chew gum, or bring an outside beverage into the interview (even water)
  12. Bring a family member or friend to the interview with you
  13. Wear sunshades or a cap
  14. Fail to explain the value you bring to the company
  15. Ask the interviewer personal questions or share too much personal information about you

What is the best job interview you have had?
