Don’t Try This At Home

I have done lots of interviewing and hiring. I used my experience to create the ebook “Get Hired Toolbox: 30 Ways to Land the Job Of Your Dreams”. The strategies outlined in the ebook are perfect for youth, college students, new professionals, and seasoned professionals. Yep, there’s something for you whether you are about to graduate high school, transition from secondary education to the workforce, have been unemployed for a significant amount of time, you’re under-employed, or simply want to change jobs or embark on a new career.

This past week, Marina Shifrin became a video super star when her dance routine resignation went viral. Clever, creative, funny, and bold have been used to describe her approach. I’m not a fan of this new trend of quitting your job in the public eye. Although she said she had no regrets, the former video producer recognized that she had probably limited her employment opportunities.

Days later, Marina’s former employer made a dance video telling the world that they are hiring for her old position. Next day, Marina is a guest on the new Queen Latifah Talk Show and receives a “dream job”offer to join Latifah’s team.

There are two questions I don’t have answers to:

  1. Did Marina secretly yearn to be famous and hope this “stunt” would go viral?
  2. Is Queen Latifah really interested in Marina or is she playing the ratings game? (Marina is a two-episode guest. You have to tune in today to find out if she accepted the Queen’s job offer)

Question of the Day: Am I Old School?

Hmm….Basically a video producer for a video company creates a video to deliver the news to her boss that she is quitting her job. Although she bounced back very quickly, I believe that Marina got lucky. This could have been a career disaster and likely would have been in other industries. Four million YouTube views may sound appealing and may eventually get you paid, but standard rule of thumb for the rest of us is to give a written resignation letter with at least two weeks notice. It’s generally easier to find a job when you are already employed so I also recommend having another job before you quit. I may be old school but when it comes to 5 minutes of fame…Don’t Try This At Home!
