Many students are aware of the benefits of a successful internship but are unsure of how to find the right internship for them. Here are 5 ways to find the perfect internship:

1. Decide what you want to do right now
The first step to finding the best internship opportunity for you is to decide what you want to explore. You do not have to decide what you want to do with the rest of your life – you only need to decide what you want to undertake first. It is important to decide the type of work you want to do and the type of agency you want to work in. An internship allows you to apply your classroom knowledge and to discover your preferences and skills.

2. Ask for recommendations
After determining the type of work you want to pursue, it is then time to ask your friends, family, coworkers, professors, and classmates for recommendations that fit your criteria. Your professional network can be invaluable in launching a successful career.

3. Make an appointment with the Career Services Department at your school
Not only will your Career Services Department have access to a database of job and internship opportunities, they will also be able to help you prepare your cover letter and resume and possible also offer interview preparation assistance.

4. Learn more about companies you are already familiar with
Trust your instincts and feed your curiosity by researching companies that you’ve heard about and think you would enjoy working in. Begin by conducting online research but don’t overlook informational interviews in your effort to secure the perfect internship.

5. Visit online internship sites
Visit websites that specialize in internship opportunities such as:

  • Idealist.org
  • Internships.com
  • Internqueen.com
  • Internweb.com
