Whether you are diving into your first real job or changing careers I recommend easing into the arena. The fastest way to ease into a career is by doing the career. The reason that universities require internships and employers ask for education or experience is because you really can’t beat on the job training. Reading, watching, and studying are not enough to excel in a tough job market. Greatness comes from action. The best way to learn is to learn by doing. Volunteering or interning in an industry or organization that interests you gives you a chance to try out the work and see if you like it, develop the skills to succeed in the field, and if done well affords you the opportunity to secure a strong professional reference. You may not get paid immediately but the long-term gains can be priceless.
