We all have them.
Mine are likely different from yours, but we all have them. Their behavior can be unpredictable and even shocking. They come and go it seems as they please and often times they show up unannounced. We put them in their place and they may behave for quite some time but return with a slightly different perspective or even bring along a close relative. Enough is enough.
Let us remember our power when we see them again. Let us remain focused, explore their origin and purpose, and let them know that we are in control – not them.
What are they? Limiting beliefs.
My limiting beliefs show up as resistance and procrastination. What about yours?
Moment of transparency: I’m in an amazing group coaching program and one of the assignments required me to stretch. Duh, that’s the point of coaching, right? If you know me then you know that I don’t do things that I don’t want to do. You also know that I believe that I can do anything that I set my mind to. My limiting beliefs know that as well so they can’t come at me with a regular game plan. Back to the assignment. My resistance was so high that I felt a negative shift in my mood. I decided that I would NOT do the assignment – that’s an important distinction because my inner critic never tells me that I can’t do something. Instead of “I can’t do it”, I decided that “I won’t do it”. Then I turned the page in my workbook and guess what? I had already DONE the assignment the day before. All of that for nothing because the assignment had already been completed!
In October, let’s (re)commit to limiting our limiting beliefs and take back our power!
