Welcome back to our Get Hired job search blog series.  Are you ready to tackle day 14?

Question of the Day: What does your wardrobe say about you?

When you are actively job hunting it is not the time to be eccentric and trendy – it just might be best to go along with the crowd.

Job search tip #13: You can’t go wrong with a classic business look.

“Dress for success” is a common cliché but job seekers should heed this advice and go with a classic business look when submitting applications in person, attending a job fair, or going on an interview.  You will be judged on your attire. For both men and women a two-piece matched dark color suit is the safest option – black, black pinstripe, navy blue, dark brown.  If money is a concern, you may find quality traditional pieces at lower cost at discount stores and second hand shops.  Many community organizations also provide free professional clothing.

You don’t get a second chance to make a good first impression:

  • All clothing should be clean and wrinkle free.
  • Men and women should avoid loud and large jewelry.
  • Hair and nails should be well groomed.
  • Select good, comfortable shoes.
  • Avoid bright, trendy, and juvenile fabrics and accessories.
  • Do not wear a lot of cologne or perfume.
  • Men should wear a classic tie.
  • Pant suits are also acceptable for women.
  • Women’s skirts should at least meet the knee.
  • Keep make up conservative.
