Question of the Day: How do you increase your chances of getting selected for an interview?

Job search tip 12#: Target Your Cover Letter

Most employers have a multi-phase applicant screening process.  Writing customized cover letters takes more time but in order to make it pass the first round of screening you must target your cover letter specifically to the company to which you are applying.  Address the cover letter to the hiring manager if you have their contact information.

A cover letter should be one page or less.  Get straight to the point by responding to the job ad and highlighting your qualifications.  The first paragraph should include how you learned about the position. Use your research skills to learn all you can about the company then briefly mention a key piece of information that you learned.  Follow the qualifications in the job posting to show how your skills and experiences match the employee the company is seeking. Targeted key words should be used in your cover letter as well as your resume.  Remember that your cover letter is the place to expand on the details of your resume not repeat them.
