Is That Really Necessary?

Welcome back to our job search blog series.  Hard to believe it’s day 12 in our Get Hired program.  I’m really excited about supporting you in your job search efforts.

Question of the Day: Did you draft your resume?

A resume objective is not mandatory and many experts recommend eliminating it from your resume completely.  A traditional objective tells the employer what you are looking for in a position.  It doesn’t focus on what the employer needs.  Recruiters and hiring managers are interested solely in what you have to offer.

Job search tip #11: Delete the objective from your resume

The more clearly you can describe your professional qualifications the better chance you have of being considered for the job you are interested in.  My recommendation is to draft a branding or positioning statement/summary instead of an objective.  The summary is where you tell the employer what you are known for.  It is where you can highlight your soft skills, quantify years of experience, and use impressive adjectives.

Here is one variation of my resume summary:

“Respected professional with extensive experience managing teams of diverse individuals to produce positive outcomes. Highly successful in planning, initiating, and managing relationships between the public and private sectors. Knowledge of current research and best practices related to positive youth development, leadership development, and community engagement.”

Soft Skills Also called people skills because they have to do with how people relate to each other.  Examples – communicating, listening, solving problems, providing feedback, managing time, resolving conflict

Stay tuned for job search tip #12 tomorrow.
