Question of the Day: Is That True?

Job Search Tip #10: Create a resume template
On yesterday I explained that your resume would most likely be screened by a computer and a hiring manager. Therefore, your resume should include key words that appear in each job description. Prepare a standard resume that will be tailored to each position for which you apply.

10 resume preparation tips:

  1. Review sample resumes for ideas for your own job search materials.
  2. Use Arial or Times New Roman 12 point font. Choose a format that is easy to read.
  3. Resume header should include full name, address, best phone number to reach you on, and a professional email address.
  4. List your most recent and relevant experience first.
  5. Include name of company, job title, years of employment, and location for each position.
  6. List key accomplishments and not just job duties for each position.
  7. Be truthful. Do not invent skills or responsibilities.
  8. Try to keep your resume at one or two pages. You do not have to list all of your work experience. Fifteen years is a good rule of thumb.
  9. Highlight relevant education and training.
  10. Check and recheck your grammar and spelling.
