This past winter I saw a Strayer University commercial with Steve Harvey as a spokesperson. I understand that higher education is a business and that Strayer University enrollment has dropped over the years. I know that Strayer is in competition with other for profit institutions and they must advertise in order to remain in business. I know very talented and successful Strayer University graduates and in all honesty I thought that advertising in this way was beneath them. I also thought that a Straer University spokesperson should have a college degree. Then I realized that I am not their target audience and that many in their target audience look up to Steve Harvey.
A couple of weeks after seeing the first Strayer University and Steve Harvey collaboration, I saw a second commercial that was absolutely BRILLIANT! Steve Harvey is a brand – the master of reinvention. This second commercial leaves no room to question whether Steve has a degree and doesn’t feel like a sales pitch. It is authentically Steve and highlights exactly what working adults who enroll in college are seeking. Totally brilliant marketing!
