My Critique of Job Or No Job

Job hunting is hard no matter who you are or what work experience or degree you have. I have reviewed many resumes and interviewed many people so my hope was that the show would help Americans better prepare for the job hunting journey. This is the main reason that I tuned in to the premiere episode of the new ABC Family television show ‘Job Or No Job’.

Job Or No Job follows one millennial on their quest to land their first “real” job. Each job applicant goes on three televised job interviews with the hopes of landing a job offer. Jane Buckingham serves as the career expert who critiques the applicant after each interview.

In episode one Gabrielle was a recent college graduate with a food management degree and a love of cooking. Thanks to the television show, she was given interviews with three of Chicago’s best restaurants. Here is how Gabrielle shined:
• She was flexible when given a test
• She research the companies before her interview
• She was authentic and did not pretend to be someone she was not
• She listed to the advice of the expert
• She never gave up on herself even when things didn’t go well

When Gabrielle did these things I wanted to scream:
• She forgot her resume on the first interview (If she was my client her resume would be inside her professional portfolio that she takes with her on every interview.)
• She “dressed up” but her attire was more appropriate for a person who already had a job and not someone on a job interview. (I was horrified when a bread crumb fell down the peephole in her blouse. Showing cleavage on an interview is not recommended.)
• She used profanity on one interview (NEVER use profanity on an interview)
• She also became a bit star struck and hugged her interviewer at the beginning of the interview and then began to cry by the end of the interview.

One restaurateur, who did not offer Gabrielle a job, called her impatient for mentioning that she wanted to open her own restaurant. I don’t agree that Gabrielle should not have shared her ultimate career goals. I do believe that he response could have been more polished and included a later timeline so that the employers would not think she only planned to work for them short-term.

I was excited when Gabrielle received a job offer from her top choice restaurant. This restaurant in my opinion was a much better fit for her personality than the others. Ironically, this was also the interview where she gave a hug, cursed, dropped bread in her bra, and cried.  Her authenticity was as a selling point.

I will be watching and live tweeting (@PkgdForSuccess) during episode 2 tonight. Job Or No Job airs on ABC Family on Wednesdays at 9:00pm. Let’s tune in and tweet together with America. #JobOrNoJobChat
