Donnie Simpson: The Innovator Returns to DC Radio

I love urban music (which you already know if you’ve read my summer blogs). I am excited that Donnie Simpson, urban radio legend, will return to the DC airways since retiring 5 years ago. After leaving CBS radio in 2010 following a 17 year morning show run, Donnie is returning to Radio One where he worked as the morning disc jockey for 15 years. Donnie will host “The Donnie Simpson Show” afternoons from 3:00pm-7:00pm starting August 17, 2015. Donnie is also in talks with TV One to collaborate on a series of television programs.

Donnie Simpson’s career is a fantastic blueprint for anyone who seeks longevity in broadcasting. Donnie left WPGC after creative differences with management. He refused to change the music and format of his long-running show. In 1998 Donnie was voted Billboard’s Air Personality of the Year. He was pegged by Bob Johnson to host Video Soul on BET from 1983-1996. Video Soul brought him into the homes of millions of Americans daily. Donnie also had a cameo appearance in the movie Krush Groove (my favorite movie ever) in 1985. Donnie was the first non-syndicated urban radio personality to earn a seven figure annual salary.

Five lessons you can learn from Donnie Simpson:
1. Follow your passion
2. Be open to new opportunities
3. Surround yourself with the right people (How many people have worked for both Bob Johnson and Cathy Hughes?)
4. Don’t compromise your values
5. Strategically plan you next career move
