Professional Social Work Associations and Organizations

When I tell people that I have a Master’s degree in Social Work they usually think I work in child welfare or provide clinical services. I think it’s safe to say that every social worker I’ve seen on television or in movies has been a child welfare worker removing children from an unsafe home. I believe that all of the mental health professionals I’ve seen in Hollywood are psychologists or psychiatrists. Child protection is essential, difficult work but I am not fond of stereotypes.

Social Work is a profession with depth and diversity. Social Workers hold positions as Program Managers, Development Directors, Case Managers, Policy Analysts, Researchers, School Social Workers, Community Organizers, and Employee Relations Coordinators. I want to take this opportunity to share with you various professional social work associations and organizations.

The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is the largest membership organization of professional social workers in the world, with 132,000 members. NASW works to enhance the professional growth and development of its members, to create and maintain professional standards, and to advance sound social policies.
