Sometimes the leader knows before the leader-in-the-making does.
S.O.F.T. Leadership™ requires stewardship.
Years ago, I hired a recent graduate for their first full-time role after completing an MPA. During the interview, they shared a bold goal: they wanted to help change the education system — including higher education.
Their role included facilitating multiple weekly groups in a school-based program, building relationships with school staff, and navigating public school policies and procedures.
They were doing strong work.
When an opportunity arose, they volunteered to lead our alumni group for high school graduates. Around the same time, I scheduled them to serve as a guest lecturer in one of my undergraduate classes.
Not because they asked.
Because I remembered their vision.
Like many emerging leaders, they weren’t fully convinced they were ready. So I did what leaders are supposed to do.
I prepared them.
Reviewed the material.
Talked through the classroom dynamic.
Helped them refine their message.
Because sometimes leadership means recognizing someone’s readiness before they can see it themselves.
That’s stewardship.
Inside S.O.F.T. Leadership™, stewardship looks like:
• Strategy that recognizes someone’s capacity before they fully trust it.
• Opportunity offered with discernment, not pressure.
• Fulfillment that allows people to grow without losing themselves.
• Transformation that advances both the leader and the people they develop.
Great leaders don’t just manage people.
They develop people.
Sometimes that means opening doors.
Sometimes it means offering guidance.
And sometimes it means saying, “You’re ready.”
Even when they’re not sure yet.
Moments like these are part of what shaped the S.O.F.T. Leadership™ framework I teach today – leadership that develops people while sustaining the leader.
Think about the leaders who saw something in you before you saw it yourself.
The ones who offered the opportunity. The ones who prepared you for it.
That’s stewardship.
