Awareness is knowing what’s happening around you, self-awareness is knowing what you’re experiencing. In a nutshell, self-awareness is all about reflection. Self-awareness helps you understand your values, priorities, relationships, emotions, as well as the things that have meaning to your life and work. Self-awareness will also help you uncover your skills, abilities, triggers, and areas of growth. Dedicating time to explore self-awareness can give you a distinct advantage in the workplace. The more aware you are of your beliefs, patterns, assets, and strengths the better you can perform on the job. Self-awareness can also help you discover how other people see you and engage with you.
Self-awareness means that you understand yourself better so you can make informed decisions that will help you improve your career and life. Self-awareness will allow you to identify what you like and dislike about your job and the type of work and work environment where you will thrive. Self-awareness is a critical component of career acceleration.
One strategy to help you become more self-aware at work is to start a career or professional journal. A career journal is an informal record of your achievements, ideas, goals, and even your challenges and the resolutions you implemented. Here are a few questions to jump start your career journaling journey.
- Do you feel energized by your work?
- Do you feel you are well-paid and fairly compensated for your education and experience?
- Does your manager recognize and show appreciation for your contributions?
- What’s working in your role and what isn’t?
- What about working in your industry no longer serves you?
- Where have you grown as a professional?
If you are tired of being overworked, underpaid, and unappreciated, know that dedicating time for reflection and self-awareness can initiate the process of becoming energized, well-paid, and appreciated through the evaluation of your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
