We Have Changed How We Labor!

Happy Labor Day!

Labor Day is a federal holiday in the United States celebrated on the first Monday in September to honor and recognize the American labor movement and the work and contributions of laborers to the development and achievements of the US.

During the height of the coronavirus pandemic, we experienced The Great Resignation as employees began to reevaluate their careers, salaries, work environments, and long-term goals. They expanded and expressed their expectations of their employers and were willing to walk away if their needs were not met – this included permanent telework options. Additionally, many were forced from the workforce due to mental health challenges, physical illness, family priorities, and job loss.

Many companies have ended or decreased their work-from-home options and the number of boomerang employees is increasing, but I believe how we labor as a society has been altered indefinitely. After employers crying for a year that “no one wants to work”, we are now in the midst of what is ridiculously being called quiet quitting. This is not quitting. Employees are still on the job. They are prioritizing themselves, their families, and their mental health by doing the job they are paid to do and capitalism can’t handle the halt to worker exploitation.  What we are seeing is not disengagement, it is setting healthy boundaries. Workers are refusing to work more hours than the hours they are paid, take on other people’s work, and skip lunch and vacation. It’s about time!!!

I have experienced professional burnout and compassion fatigue. I have been overworked, underpaid, and felt unappreciated. I am unwilling to go back to the dark side. I am done with hustle culture and I’m happily tapping into ease and flow. I welcome you to join me.
