Why Job Or No Job Is Great Television Viewing

I have done A LOT of interviewing over the last 8 years. I am saddened when I see candidates with law degrees and doctoral degrees apply for positions that require a Bachelor’s degree. What I know for sure is that many people remain unemployed, not because of the past recession or slow job growth, but because they do not have the knowledge or skills to make it through the gatekeepers (whether human or digital). Social media platforms like LinkedIn have made it easier to locate the correct contact information for hiring managers and company presidents but the internet also allows many more people to apply for the same position. Once a person’s resume makes it through the initial gatekeepers, they may not interview well which disqualifies them from the applicant pool at phase two.

I have learned that many people don’t know how to draft a quality resume or know what type of document should be submitted as a writing sample. I have learned that every applicant doesn’t thoroughly read or save the position description of the job for which they are applying. I have learned that not everyone dresses in professional attire for an interview. I have learned that many people don’t know what interview responses set off a red flag for the hiring manager. When hiring I am clear about the candidate that I am seeking and generally have a three part interview process – phone, in person with me, then a final interview with their potential coworkers. I have high standards and expectations but I use every opening to turn each interview into a teaching opportunity. My natural inclination to teach is the reason that I feel Job Or No Job is great television viewing. Job Or No Job is a teaching tool. The show emphasizes the need for interview preparation and the benefits of professional career coaching.

Another reason that I am glad the Job Or No Job is broadcast is because it shows Americans that millennials are not lazy and they want to work. The third reason that I’m falling in love with this TV show is that candidates who have been overlooked or rejected get an opportunity to interview directly with the owners of very successful companies. The likelihood that the average recent graduate would have these amazing opportunities is slim to none. This show highlights the value of a strong professional network. A strong professional network introduces you to influencers and opens doors that ordinarily would be closed to you.

I will be watching and live tweeting during episode 3 tonight. Job Or No Job airs on ABC Family on Wednesdays at 9:00pm. Let’s tune in and tweet together. #JobOrNoJob
